Szentgyörgy Mountain

There are huge basalt pillars on the side of the famous 415 meter high Szentgyörgy Hill. The columnar partition can be observed on the surface of several of the volcanic hills of the Tapolca basin.

Its evolution is explained by the fact that the lava following the volcanic eruption spread like a thin cake and solidified on the top and side of the mountains. The basal cap protected the less hard layers beneath it from the devastating effects of wind and water.
